Is this our last Independence Day?

I’d feel better if we were facing space aliens.

Will this be the last REAL celebration of “Independence Day”? I mean, July 4, 1776 happened. As did the holocaust, the moon landing and many, many other events that people try to deny. So far, no one denies that the original Independence Day did, indeed, happen. The Declaration of Independence exists and so does the Constitution. But. Hard stop. These two most important documents for the American way of life are being twisted, dismantled and just plain ignored.

I feel like writing a diatribe about the republican party, the supreme court, and, of course, the child masquerading as an adult and the current president of the United States. But, I probably have little to say that hasn’t been said or isn’t being currently said (by Representative Hakeem Jeffries). So I won’t go there for now anyway,

Like many others, I see what has been happening, at least since January 2025, as crazily similar to the rise of Nazi Germany. I’m 64. A tag-end baby boomer. Of course, I wasn’t alive during WWII, but it was a significant part of what I was taught in history classes. At that time, I couldn’t understand how the German people let Hitler get to the top and do all the things he did. I certainly never considered anything remotely like it happening in the US. But here we are, watching it unfold before our eyes. I ended up with a BA in Political Science after changing majors several times. I learned about the “strong man”. I get that Germany’s capitulation to end WWI and the subsequent “pay backs” essentially humiliated Germany and especially the soldiers who fought. So far, I don’t understand the similar circumstance here in the US. History will tell.

Anyway. As things proceed, I can’t help but wonder what a year from now will be like. Will the democrats get their shit together and be able to take over as the majority? Will we even HAVE elections next year? I expect to read the results of the House vote on the despicable bill any time now. I feel sick. How much sicker are we all going to feel this time next year? God, I hope I’m wrong.
